Richard Milhous Nixon, 1913-1994.  37th President of the United States.  Excellent condition 8" x 10" black-and-white portrait photograph of a smiling Nixon, inscribed and signed To Jack Matlack / with best wishes / from Richard Nixon.

This is a magnificent vintage 1966 portrait of Nixon by famed New York photographer Philippe Halsman, whose imprint appears in the lower right corner. Halsman is noted for his bold images, including his portraits of Salvador Dali, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and even Nixon jumping in the air.  From the 1940s through the 1970s, Halsmans portraits graced the covers and pages of magazines such as Life, Look, Esquire, and the Saturday Evening Post. In 1958, a Popular Photography poll named Halsman one of the Worlds Ten Greatest Photographers.

Jack Matlack, to whom Nixon gave this portrait, was a Portland, Oregon, advertising and public relations executive.

This photograph is exceptional.  Nixon has boldly inscribed and signed it in black felt-tip pen.  His signature is 3" long.  The photo is mounted to a stiff backing board.  There are two slight creases, one in the lower left corner and one at the bottom of the image extending through the “t" in "Matlack,” but they are not particularly noticeable.  There is also slight brushing to the m R" in from Richard."  Overall the piece is in excellent condition.

Unframed.
